Connect to IRC using Trillian!

Trillian is a Windows program that allows you to connect to multiple instant messenger and chat services using one program. People like it because it puts all their eggs in the same basket, as it were. Trillian Basic lets you connect to AIM, MSN, ICQ, Yahoo!Messenger, and IRC. Trillian Pro lets you connect to all of that plus a few other goodies.

This "tutorial" was written for those people who really dislike the thought of downloading mIRC or any other Windows IRC client, but do have Trillian installed on their computer and are rather annoyed with our trusty Java IRC client that is accessible via web browser. If you don't have Trillian but would like to check it out anyway, the Basic version is the free version, and you can download it at ceruleanstudios.com. :)

  1. First, go to Trillian Preferences, and then go down to "Plugins". You should see something like this (if you're using the TRILLIAN BASIC version):

Select IRC. Then go to Identities and Connections.
  2. Under "Identities and Connections", tell it to "Add a new connection" and choose IRC as the connection type. Fill out the information as shown below:

IRC PROTIP: Under the Nickname spot (the third blank), DO NOT ADD SPACES TO YOUR NAME. Put in _ if you absolutely need spaces.
  3. Click "Change..." Under Perform Buffer, check the "After successful connection to IRC blah blah" thing and type in /join #orbo in the space below that. Save settings.
  4. Click Connect.
  5. Voila?
Here's a small list of IRC commands that you can use:

Command Action
/me youractionhere Send an action out to the channel, like this:

* RobinSena whistles
/join #channel Join a channel with the name CHANNEL.
/part #channel Leave a channel named CHANNEL
/quit whatevermessageyouwanthere Quits IRC, with your message.
/NickServ register urpasswerd your@ema.il Register your unique nickname, so no one can steal it from you! You will be e-mailed by NickServ an authorization code. Just copy paste the command they send you into mIRC and hit Enter. :D

If you do register your name, PLEASE USE YOUR REAL E-MAIL! Or else, you won't get the authorization code! :|| Also, your password IS case-sensitive!
/NickServ identify urpasswerd Tells NickServ that you are the owner of the nickname. You probably want to put this command in step 5 once you register your nickname with the "/join #stnj" thing you typed in there before, so you will automatically identify for your nickname when you connect. Be careful!

Those are most of the basic IRC commands that you need to know. If you still need help, feel free to ask someone in chat, or email Kala: orbo at vauss dot com
